Silver fox tail is a great fly tying material that is known for its soft, long, and mobile guard hairs, as well as its dense underfur. These characteristics are ideal for creating streamers and salmon flies that have a lifelike, pulsating action in the water.

Common uses for silver fox tail

Wings: The long, fine guard hairs are perfect for tying hair wings on larger flies, such as Atlantic salmon flies, steelhead patterns, and tube flies. The natural black-tipped hair provides an excellent transition from light to dark, creating contrast and an attractive appearance.

Tails: The soft, tapered fur is used for creating tails on various streamer and baitfish imitations. The inherent movement and life-like profile make it effective for enticing predatory fish.

Collars and hackles: The underfur and guard hairs can be combined to form a voluminous, flowing collar. This "breathing" effect gives the fly a look of being alive in the water.

Underwings: The soft, buoyant underfur can be used as an underwing to add volume and shape to a pattern.

Dubbing: The dense underfur can be separated from the guard hairs and used in dubbing loops to create brushes or full bodies for flies.
